A historic football season in Shelby County added another mark on Sunday, Dec. 19 when the All-State football team was released, featuring the state’s best football players from the 2021 season.
On that list, 26 players from Shelby County were honored following their efforts in leading their respective teams to special seasons.
The list not only featured 26 local players being named as the top in the state, but it featured 12 on their respective first team, seven on the second team and seven honorable mentions.
Following their third state championship in a row, the Thompson Warriors had easily the most representation with nine players making the Class 7A team, which tied for the most of any team with Class 5A Pleasant Grove and the AISA’s Autauga Academy.
Thompson had a state-high eight players named to the 7A first team following the Warriors’ third state championship in a row.
On the first team offense included quarterback Conner Harrell, receiver Ryan Peppins, athlete Justin Pegues and offensive lineman Stanton Ramil.
Those three helped play a major role in Thompson averaging 45.4 points per game this season, including 41 or more in all but three of 14 games this season.
Harrell, who was named the Class 7A Back of the Year last season, totaled 3,126 passing yards and 47 touchdowns this season on 163-of-232 passing. He also totaled 405 rushing yards and five additional touchdowns on the ground.
Peppins finished the season as one of the state’s top receivers after putting together 1,564 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns on 80 receptions. He also won the MVP of the state championship game after totaling 204 yards to lead the Warriors to the title.
As one of the state’s best athletes, Pegues totaled 664 receiving yards and 571 rushing yards this season for the Warriors with six total touchdowns, while he was also one of the top kick returners in the state.
Ramil earned several Division I offers during the season for his impressive play on the line, which included 13 pancake blocks and paving the way for more than 5,000 yards of offense.
Defensively, however, is where Thompson dropped jaws this season, giving up 7.1 points per game.
And the All-State team recognized five players from Thompson’s defense, including four on the first team.
Peter Woods, Jeremiah Alexander, Tre’Quon Fegans and Tony Mitchell were the first teamers, while Jax Van Zandt earned a spot on the second team.
Woods and Alexander were a force on each end of the line this season, which was a big reason for the team’s success on that side of the ball.
Woods totaled 51 solo tackles and 40 assisted, many of which came for a loss with 28.5 tackles for loss. Alexander had almost identical numbers, as the Alabama signee totaled 54 solo tackles, 29 assisted tackles and 28 tackles for loss with a pick-six.
Those two, however, were just two of four prominent recruits for the Thompson defense this season.
Fegans and Mitchell, both in the secondary, also put together special seasons.
Fegans totaled 30.5 tackles, four tackles for loss and three interceptions, while he added 10 pass breakups.
Mitchell, who is one of the most intimidating players in the secondary because of his ability to hit hard and make tackles in space while also preventing completions, totaled 37 tackles with four tackles for loss. He also added eight pass breakups and two interceptions with most teams trying to avoid his position on the field.
Closing out a special career with the Warriors, Van Zandt made the second team after totaling 15 tackles for loss this season as part of 60 total tackles.
Joining the Warriors on the Class 7A All-State team were three players from Oak Mountain as well.
The Eagles earned one player on the first team and two honorable mention players.
Evan Smith, the county’s Player of the Year, was named to the All-State first team as an athlete for the Eagles after totaling 1,110 rushing yards and 1,184 passing yards with a combined 28 touchdowns. He also played some at defensive back and as a kick returner.
Joining him from Oak Mountain were Gavin Nelson and Corbitt Grundhoefer as honorable mention defenders.
Grundhoefer totaled 57 solo tackles, 27 assisted tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack, while he also tied for the lead in the county with five.
Nelson finished the season as one of the leaders up front for the Eagles with 61 solo tackles, 35 assisted tackles, 15 tackles for loss and six sacks.
In the 6A classification, seven total players from the county earned a spot on the All-State team, including three from Briarwood.
Alex Moorer and Haddon Stubbs both earned a spot from on the second team, while quarterback Christopher Vizzina earned an honorable mention spot.
Moorer was the leader for the Lions up front after totaling 45 pancake blocks and paving the way for a team that ran for close to 2,000 yards this season.
Stubbs earned a spot on the defense as the second team punter following a great year for the Lions. He also totaled 58 solo tackles, 41 assisted tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions with four forced fumbles for the defense.
The Helena Huskies also had multiple players named to the 6A All-State team with sophomore running back Jordan Washington and senior defensive lineman Joel Logan both earning a spot.
Washington was the county’s second-leading rusher this season with 1,606 yards and 26 touchdowns on 226 carries.
Logan totaled 21 tackles for loss and 14 sacks to finish third in the county behind two of the country’s top recruits. He finished with 61 total tackles for the Huskies.
Calera receiver Kobe Prentice was the only other player from the county to earn a spot on the first team after a remarkable season.
The Alabama signee totaled 1,231 yards on 69 catches with 18 touchdowns despite being the focal point of every opponent’s defense.
Pelham’s Caleb Newell earned a spot on the second team for the Panthers. The Kennesaw State signee finished his senior season with 70 pancake blocks and was a leader for the Panthers up front.
The Montevallo Bulldogs had three players earn a spot on the Class 4A All-State team, including Joseph Anderson on the first team.
Anderson finished the season with 2,346 rushing yards, which gives him the most rushing yards for a single season in the county’s history. He reached that mark on 243 carries and totaled 29 touchdowns as a huge part of the Bulldogs’ offense.
Cole Dennis earned a spot on the second team following solid play on both sides of the line this season. He made it as a defensive lineman after totaling 77.5 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and six sacks for an improved Montevallo defense.
Kial Cottingham also earned a spot as an honorable mention defensive back, as the senior athlete totaled four interceptions this season even while leading the team’s offense at quarterback.
In addition to his defensive presence, he totaled 385 rushing yards and 608 passing yards with 18 touchdowns on offense.
The Vincent Yellow Jackets had two players earn a spot on the Class 2A second team as athletes.
Jermarey Lawson and Tray Youngblood both earned praise following special seasons on both sides of the ball.
Lawson finished the season with 1,409 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, while he added 122 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions. He had a total of 1,661 all-purpose yards.
Youngblood, who totaled 1,032 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns for the Jackets, also had four interceptions, which was the second best mark in the county.
The final two players to earn a spot on the team included Cornerstone’s Justus Adams and Warren Goodwin in the AISA.
Adams earned a spot on the first team after finishing the season 90.5 tackles, including 28 for loss and nine sacks. He also added 15 pancake blocks offensively.
Goodwin earned a spot on as an honorable mention following 47.5 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks and an interception.
