The Famers Market Authority is giving eligible seniors the chance to get vouchers to redeem for fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from a designated market.

The Farmer’s Market Nutrition Programs, administered through the Farmers Market Authority, provide a direct tie between production agriculture and nutrition by providing seniors the opportunity to buy fresh local produce directly from farmers.

The FMNP programs seek to increase the consumption of fresh, nutritious and unprepared locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs, while adding in the development of new and additional farmers markets, roadside stands and community supported agriculture programs.

To receive free vouchers, seniors must be at least 60 years old with a gross household income not exceeding $16,800 for a household of one, $22,600 for a household of two or $28,400 for a household of three.

Vouchers are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging is one of 13 Area Agencies on Aging in the state. The agency provides services and advocates for seniors, their caregivers and those with disabilities. It is funded through the Alabama Department of Senior Services, federal grants and local funds.
