Back in the spring of 1999, I had a letter to the editor published, along with a picture, about litter along our roadsides.

In short, the wife and I gathered a pickup-load of litter in less than a fourth of a mile up and down either side of a section of County Road 49. In that letter I asked our elected officials a very simple question, “When was the last time anyone was cited for littering in our county?”

Today, almost 10 years later, I again pulled out of my drive and the beautiful weather allowed me a good look at the roadside along the lower portion of County Road 49. Sorry to say, nothing seems to have changed in the last ten years. There is still lots and lots of litter. I also never received a reply from any official.

So one more time, county officials: When was the last time someone was cited for littering?

I know this is not a great crime and I also know our local law enforcement officers do a great job. But a ticket now and again would not hurt and might even put a couple of dollars into the county kitty.
