An Interstate 65 expansion project that involves planning, overlay and re-striping from the Shelby County 52 overpass to the south end of the Cahaba River Bridge is scheduled to take place from July 6 through late fall 2020.

Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) was set to begin preliminary work on Monday, July 6, including the placement of construction signs and engineering layout.

Starting Sunday, July 12 from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. daily, asphalt leveling and re-striping will begin in the northbound (inside) lane. After completion, the same operation will take place in the southbound lane.

Monday, July 20, asphalt milling will be performed in the northbound (inside) lane for the length of the project and then proceed to the southbound lane.

Sunday, Aug. 2, asphalt paving for the new inside lane will begin northbound near the Exit 242 (Shelby County 52) Overpass in Pelham. Once completed, the process will take place in the southbound lane.

This process will be followed to complete all of the remaining three lanes in the northbound and southbound direction until the completion of the project.  The project is expected to be completed by late fall of 2020.

Once this project is complete, there will be four lanes in both directions from Alabaster to I-459.

The contract was awarded to Dunn Construction and Wiregrass Construction for $5,798.542.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival and departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.
