Johnny and Anthony Brooklere, of Brooklere Pharmacy in Alabaster, and Kacie White, of Cowart Drug Company in Calera, were recently recognized as Patient Champions by the American Pharmacy Cooperative, Inc. (APCI).

Founded in 1984, APCI is the market leader in independent pharmacy associations and serves more than 1,800 members in 26 states.

“Pharmacists like Johnny and Anthony and Kacie White are vital to our communities because they know that nothing is more important than earning and keeping their neighbors’ trust,” said Tim Hamrick, CEO of APCI. “Independent, locally-owned pharmacies provide that personal, patient-focused care that no big-box chain can. APCI is proud to offer the training, products and supportive services that community-based, local pharmacies need to ensure their patients receive the quality care they deserve.”

Cowart Drug Company will celebrate its 100th anniversary in September, and White, who bought the pharmacy from the previous owner in 2014, has worked there for 18 years.

“Our patients become like our own family members, and I’m proud that we don’t treat them as numbers,” said White, who earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Samford University. “I try to go above and beyond for them, whether it’s finding a coupon to lower their co-pays, reaching out to providers to find other cost-saving options, or contacting insurance companies to find alternatives. Now more than ever, independent business owners are feeling pressured, but our community has stood behind us and continues to support local business. We are proud to give back to our community and support local organizations, as well.”

Brooklere Pharmacy, which has three locations, opened in Alabaster 10 years ago after the father-son duo purchased the building previously occupied by Wood Pharmacy. The Brookleres also have stores in Adamsville and Sumiton.

“Our staff is incredible,” said Johnny Brooklere, who followed in his father’s footsteps and earned his pharmacy degree at Auburn University. “We are truly committed to the health and well-being of our patients, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve our friends and neighbors in our community. We know our patients by name, not just by refill number.”

APCI equips independent pharmacists with the professional education and tools they need to better serve their patients. The cooperative provides continuing education courses for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, as well as training on technology advancements, operations trends and pharmacy techniques.
