PELHAM – A family-fun event that happens each July at Oak Mountain State Park won’t be happening this summer due to the continued spread of COVID-19 across Shelby County and the state.

This year’s Fire on the Water, scheduled for July 3 at OMSP in Pelham, has been canceled following an announcement from the city of Pelham.

“In keeping with Gov. Kay Ivey’s ‘Safer At Home Order’ amended May 21, the city of Pelham in conjunction with Oak Mountain State Park has canceled this year’s ‘Fire on the Water’ scheduled for July 3,” read a press release. “Our goal is to protect the safety, health and wellness of our residents, businesses and visitors.”

The event normally involves a full day of festivities at the state park, as gates open at 7 a.m. for guests to arrive and enjoy a day full of what the park has to offer as well as food trucks a DJ, several vendors and much more to celebrate Independence Day, making it one of the larger celebrations in the Birmingham-metro area.

“The strength of our community is our greatest asset, and we will follow Gov. Ivey’s mandate in order to stop the spread of infection and its impact on the community,” the release continued. “The City will closely monitor all recommendations issued by the governor and the state health officer (Dr. Scott Harris), and we look forward to holding events in the future.”

The city said at this time there are no plans to reschedule the event for another date.
