ALABASTER – This spring, the Alabaster City Education Association, the local affiliate of the Alabama Education Association, awarded $4,000 in scholarships to their members.
There were eight teachers, representing all of the schools in Alabaster, that reviewed the essay-based applications and made the final selections.
The first $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Amber Broadhead, a teacher at Thompson Intermediate School. She is pursuing a master’s degree in elementary education at the University of West Alabama.
The remaining three scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, were awarded to seniors in high school that are children of ACEA members. This year, all three students attend Thompson High School. The student scholarships were awarded as follows:
- Adeline Lee, daughter of Suzanne Lee (Thompson Middle), will attend Samford University.
- Kinsleigh Sabo, daughter of Heather Sabo (Creek View Elementary), will attend Troy University.
- Molly Willis, daughter of Amber Willis (Thompson Middle), will attend Auburn University Montgomery.
“We typically present the scholarships at our end-of-year member reception,” said Ava Andrews, president of the Alabaster City Education Association. “Unfortunately, we had to cancel the event that was scheduled for May 5, 2020, and were unable to present the checks in person. However, I am thankful we had the opportunity to carry on this annual tradition virtually to provide our loyal members with this benefit.”
