MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo offense has been on fire throughout the 2019-20 basketball season, but over the last 15 games, the Bulldogs have been down-right impossible to stop—a trend that continued again on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Taking on Leeds in the first round of the area tournament, the Bulldogs posted 91 points in a 91-55 victory to pick up their 15th consecutive win, advance to the area tournament championship game, and more importantly, advance to the sub-regional round of the postseason following the area title game, which will be for a spot in the Sweet 16.
During their last 15 games, the Bulldogs have scored 60 or more points in all but one of those wins, 70 or more in 11 and 80 or more in five.
In the matchup against the Leeds Greenwave, Montevallo went into the game wanting to prove they belong among the conversation as contenders for a Class 4A State Championship, and it showed with the level of intensity each player brought.
The Bulldogs came out in the opening quarter and dropped their first of two 27-point quarters in the game thanks to stellar play from Michael Jones, Jabrian Sullens and Jamarius Carter.
Jones, who went on to lead all scorers with 24 points, posted eight in the opening period, while Carter also added eight and Sullens poured in seven.
While the defense was a little slow out of the gate by allowing 15 points to three different scorers, the Bulldogs had still done enough to take a double-digit 12-point lead at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was a similar story. While not quite as impressive of a scoring period, the Bulldogs still got points from six different players, while Sullens posted eight more points to help them score 18 as a team.
The defense continued a consistent night, allowing 14 more points, as the Bulldogs took a 45-29 lead into the halftime break.
With Montevallo’s offense playing so well, that was going to be a difficult hole for the Greenwave to dig out of, and it became even more challenging after another dominant period in the third quarter from the Bulldogs.
Knowing they could put the game away with one more solid quarter of play, Jones, Sullens and Carter stepped back on the court ready to go and showed out.
Jones had a remarkable 12-point quarter after knocking down five total shots, including two 3-pointers, while Sullens and Carter each added four points in the frame.
Posting 27 more points as a team, Montevallo only gave up 12, which allowed the Bulldogs to extend the lead to 31 points at 72-41 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Montevallo got strong play from several guys on the bench, who came in and picked up valuable minutes. Two of those players were Xavier Cartwell and Grey Williams. Cartwell posted six points, while Williams posted seven to help the Bulldogs total 19 more points in the period to close out the 36-point victory.
In addition to Jones’ 24 points, Sullens had 19 points, while Carter added 12. Beyond that, Williams and Cartwell each posted 10 in the win.
Montevallo improved to 22-6 overall this season with the win.
