City of Chelsea officials will hand out free weather radios to Chelsea citizens this weekend.
City Hall will host a weather awareness event Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fire Chief Wayne Shirley said Fox 6 will have its storm chaser vehicle there, and the National Weather Service will have a presentation as well.
The event is open to anyone who wants to attend, but the weather radios are reserved for Chelsea residents only.
Shirley said residents should bring a driver’s license, utility bill or other form of identification with a Chelsea address.
The city has 1,200 weather radios, which will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. Citizens that are unable to attend the event can call City Hall Monday to see if any are left, Shirley said.
The weather radios are ideal for keeping up with bad weather when indoors, he said.
“A lot of people can’t hear the sirens if you’re watching TV indoors in your house, so they’re ideal for emergencies,” he said. “They’re great for notifying people.”
