Hundreds of employees, business leaders and public officials gathered at the new headquarters of McLeod Software in the Meadow Brook Corporate Park on April 23 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting.

That momentous occasion should be remembered as a starting line rather than a finish line.

McLeod Software, a leading provider of comprehensive transportation and logistics solutions, instantly became one of Shelby County’s largest employers and most significant economic drivers, but the real impact of the business relocating here from Jefferson County could be the economic momentum it creates.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the company announced that it had grown to more than 500 employees, well above employment projections when the company relocated.

As McLeod’s employment continues to increase, it will be in line for up to $150,000 in incentives from Shelby County. Such incentives are critical to luring such a business—along with other factors such as forward-thinking leaders, solid infrastructure a capable workforce and more.

McLeod has made a capital investment of about $12.5 million at its new home, and the benefits of having such a company in Shelby County and Hoover go well beyond improvements to the site it occupies.

“Hoover is recognized as an emerging hot spot for tech companies. McLeod’s continued growth and success are testament to Tom McLeod’s entrepreneurial vision and commitment to excellence,” Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato said. “Congratulations to the McLeod team. We are proud they call Hoover home.”

McLeod Software President CEO Tom McLeod said the new headquarters has allowed the company to consolidate its Alabama employees to a single campus, and provides ample room for even more growth.

“The response from transportation companies for our products and services has been tremendous,” McLeod said. “We have continued to attract top talent in order to expand our product development and service offerings. Our new headquarters facility in Hoover has helped to set the stage for efficient growth and operation.”

The relocation undoubtedly has been and will be beneficial for the area also. We hope we can build off the momentum created by McLeod’s move and growth to spark continued economic development and the enhanced quality of life it brings.
