HELENA – The gymnasium inside Helena Intermediate School turned into a makeshift bowling alley Sept. 26-27, as students took turns knocking down pins on the 10 different lanes as part of the “Take Your Parent to PE Week” campaign.
The campaign, hosted by Active Schools, introduces parents to their child’s physical education program and encourages them to stay engaged throughout the year while being physically active together at home and in the community.
Helena Intermediate School PE Teachers Brandon Byars, Lindsey Haynes and Logan Brashier all helped organize the day by setting up the bowling lanes for both students and parents.
“This is our third year doing this and this year we decided to set up bowling,” Byars said. “We had about 200 parents attend on Thursday.”
Every 30 minutes, PE classes took turns playing a pin challenge game where teams competed to knock down the most pins as possible to collect points.
Students and their parents raced against time to knock down as many pins as possible, all while moving and being physically active.
Kelly Herndon attended the Take Your Parents to PE Day with her fifth-grade son Camp, as they knocked down pins together.
“Typically, we get to see things with math or during an open house but I think the best thing about this is just getting to see the students being able to interact with other kids,” Kelly Herndon said.
Active Schools believes physical activity and play are essential elements for child development, overall health and a well-rounded education. The Active Schools movement is powered by more than 90 public and private sector partner organizations, 23,223 schools and approximately 13.5 million students served.
