The YMCA is gearing up for its 20^th Swinging for Kids Golf Classic on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Timberline Golf Club in Calera.

The golf tournament will benefit the Pelham and Alabaster YMCA branches. Jason Beasley, executive director of both branches, said just over $200,000 has been raised for the Y in the tournament’s 20-year history.

On average, the event raises $10,000 to $12,000 for the YMCA, but this year Beasley said the goal is to raise $15,000. The money is used to fund YMCA scholarships for families in need.

“The money offsets the cost of YMCA services for families who can’t afford to pay full price,” Beasley said.

Lunch will be served to participants at 11:30 a.m., and the tourney begins at 1 p.m. Dinner will be served afterward. Nonalcoholic beverages will be available throughout the day.

Several prizes, such as a flat screen television and golf clubs, will be up for grabs. Team prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place, and there will be a $10,000 hole in one challenge. Grand prizes will be awarded for a hole in one on a selected hole, closest to the pin on two selected par 3 holes and a long drive on a selected hole. Chipping and putting challenge prizes will also be awarded.

The YMCA will honor Calvin Gunn, Golf Classic Chairman of 15 years and a veteran Pelham YMCA board member. He has served on the Pelham YMCA Board of Directors for the last 21 years and on the golf tournament committee for 20 years. Through his many years of service, leadership and support of the Y, the golf tournament has flourished over the years.
