VINCENT –The city of Vincent had the perfect way to close out the end of July with some good old-fashioned family fun and entertainment at Vincent in the Park on Saturday, July 27.

“The Park Board has worked very hard this year to make this an event that is fun for all ages,” Bridgette Jordan-Smith, Town Council member and Park Board chairwoman said before the event and added that sponsors helped to make this a free admission event.

Featured entertainment this year was the Lamont Landers Band. They appeared on “Showtime at the Apollo” last spring and have since been in high demand, performing across the Southeast.

Band members who have played together since meeting in college include Lamont Landers (lead vocalist/guitar), Kevin Canada (keys), Bowen Robertson (drums) and Jaraven Moe Hill (bass).

Landers, a Decatur native, may sound familiar. In June, Landers went solo and with just his guitar, auditioned on “America’s Got Talent.” It did not appear to go so well for Landers at the beginning of his performance, but by the end of the episode he managed four “yes” votes to advance.

The entire band was at Vincent in the Park and performed a wide range of funk and soul music that brought smiles to faces of all ages.

The event, which was held from 4-9 p.m., also included a Children’s Village with carnival rides and a trackless train. And while this is promoted as part of the Children’s Village, numerous adults have been spotted riding the train.

In Vincent’s “community unity” style, churches are providing bottled water to help attendees battle the heat.

And what is an outdoor summertime event without tempting the taste buds? Scheduled refreshment vendors included Lynda’s Hot Fish, It’s a Boo Thang, Pina Colada Caribbean Style, El Taco Truck, Repici Italian Ice, Granny’s Lemonade, Artsy Cook and R&F Savings Club and SnoBiz Shaved Ice.

Vincent in the Park ended in grand style with a fireworks show by Miller Brother Productions. David and Tim Miller are both residents of Vincent.

“We really enjoy doing this for the community,” David Miller said. “We grew up here so it’s special.”
