Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $1.45 million grant to help a nonprofit organization in Pelham continue providing services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Safehouse of Shelby County will use the grant to continue providing forensic examinations, crisis intervention, emergency shelter and court advocacy to victims of sexual violence and domestic abuse. The organization serves victims in Shelby, Coosa, Clay and Chilton counties.

“Abuse and sexual assault victims of all ages deserve access to assistance that helps them find safe shelter and navigate the often-complex legal system,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the staff members and volunteers of Safehouse for their diligent work to assist every victim who seeks their help.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Justice Department.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in supporting organizations that help victims of sexual violence and domestic abuse,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “These kinds of partnerships help victims continue to have access to the assistance they need in a timely manner.”

ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.

Ivey notified Susan Arvin, Safehouse of Shelby County board chairperson, that the grant had been approved. Matching funds of $58,232 will supplement the grant.
