CHELSEA – Chelsea residents will soon be able to ensure the proper disposal of their American flags.

The Chelsea City Council at its meeting on Tuesday, July 2, learned that a local resident seeking the rank of Eagle Scout was building three flag retirement boxes to be placed at local fire departments.

The city provided material for the boxes, Mayor Tony Picklesimer said.

Local resident Parker Bedsole led meeting attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and then presented one of the boxes.

“We will have a representative from the (Scout) Troop come and collect these” and then retire the flags with honor, Bedsole said.

In other business, the Council:

• Heard that an estimated 6,000-7,000 people attended Chelsea Fest and The Big Kaboom, which Picklesimer called “a roaring success.”
• Reviewed plans for new welcome signs to be erected off Shelby County 47 and off U.S. 280 entering the city. “I think it will just add a little something extra to the city,” said Councilwoman Tiffany Bittner, who worked on the project.
• Heard that the Whataburger restaurant in the city closed. “I’m very confident that somebody is going to want that location,” Picklesimer said.
