ALABASTER – Several students from Alabaster’s schools wowed judges, were chosen as winners in the city’s Clean Sweep art contest among a crowded field and earned some time in the spotlight during a recent Alabaster City Council meeting.

Councilwoman Stacy Rakestraw and Alabaster Beautification Board chairperson Marie Jordan honored several students for their award-winning artwork during a May 6 council meeting.

The People Against a Littered State art contest was sponsored by the Alabaster Clean Sweep campaign and the Beautification Board, and challenged students to create environmental-themed posters and artwork using recycled materials.

Contest judges were Shelby County Arts Council Director Bruce Andrews, Southern Dance Studio owner Janis Sherwood and Beautification Board members Donna Morris and Robert Hirt.

“We had almost 100 participants from Meadow View (Elementary), Creek View (Elementary) and Thompson High School this year, and we were excited to have that many participants in our first year,” Rakestraw said. “We thank the art teachers for all of their help, and for encouraging the students to take part in that.”
