ALABASTER – Alabaster residents will have a chance to beautify their city in early April, and will be able to safely dispose of unused electronic equipment and safety documents through the city’s Clean Sweep program.

The city will continue its Clean Sweep tradition next month by holding a volunteer citywide cleanup day on Saturday, April 6, from 8 a.m.-noon.

During the day, volunteers will spread out across the city from 8 a.m.-noon each day to pick up trash along the side of the city’s roadways and in public areas such as parks. The pair of trash pickup events will count toward community service hours for area students, but volunteers must fill out a release form and have it signed by the group supervisor the day of the event before participating.

According to city guidelines, volunteers will be required to wear a provided orange safety vest, and each group will be provided with a certain number of clamping tools to help pick up trash. Gloves are recommended, but will not be provided by the city.

One adult will be assigned to supervise each group of 10 children younger than 14, and those children will be encouraged to pick up areas such as parks, and not along roadways.

Pickup areas along roadways will be marked with warning signs to alert traffic, and Alabaster police officers will make regular patrols through the pickup areas.

On Saturday, April 13, the city will hold an electronic recycling and document shredding event featuring Protec Recycling and Shred-it. The event will be held from 8 a.m.-noon in the student drop-off area at Thompson Intermediate School.

No televisions will be accepted during the event, CRT computer monitors will be accepted for $10 and hard drives will be accepted for $10.
