BIRMINGHAM – Briarwood and Westminster at Oak Mountain have both become consistent contenders when it comes to track and field and at the 2019 AHSAA Indoor State Track and Field Championships held at the Birmingham CrossPlex Feb. 1-2, both teams showed out yet again.

The Westminster at Oak Mountain girls were able to claim a fourth-place finish in the overall team standings, while the boys finished 16th. Briarwood’s two teams got a consistent effort from both teams and finished eighth in the girls’ standings and seventh in the boys’ standings.

The Knights ended up with several athletes competing at the event and for the most part took advantage.

For the girls, Hallie Porterfield, Hannah Adams, Katie Wright, Hannah York, Ellie Sachs, Kendall McCallum, Maggie McCallum, the 4X800-meter relay team, the 4X200-meter relay team and the 4X400-meter relay team all had finishes inside the top 10.

Porterfield had an impressive showing that featured two second place finishes in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run, while also taking home a third podium finish in the 800-meter run by finishing third. In all three events she finished ahead of one of her teammates.

In the 800-meter run and 3,200-meter run it was Adams, who finished ninth in the 800-meter run, while grabbing a podium finish of third in the 3,200-meter run.

In the 1,600-meter run, Wright, who is just an eighth grader, finished in fifth with a time of 5:47.76. York also had a strong day finishing fifth in the 60 meter hurdles and seventh in the 60-meter dash for the Knights.

Sachs was able to pick up a sixth-place finish in the high jump finals as a sophomore.

Kendall and Maggie McCallum closed out a strong day for the girls with Kendall finishing 10th in the high jump and Maggie taking 10th in the shot put finals.

Cooper Reynolds was the biggest individual highlight for the Westminster boys by finishing eighth in both the 3,200-meter run and 800-meter run. The boys also finished sixth in the 4X800-meter relay race.

Mitchell Drennen was the only other top 10 finisher for the knights with a 10th-place finish in the long jump finals.

Briarwood didn’t have quite as many athletes competing as the Knights did, but the Lions made the most of the ones that were there.

Jake Nunn, Trent Malloy, Nicholas Robson, Riley Margene, Riley Underwood, Cady McPhail, Adrienne Goolsby, Lauren Musachia and Caroline Keller all had top 10 finishes at the event for Briarwood.

Nunn was one of the biggest highlights thanks to his second-place finish in the 400-meter dash where he finished .01 seconds out of first in a photo finish with a time of 49.61.

In the 60 meter hurdles, after finishing fourth in the prelims, Robson was able to claim a podium spot with a finish of third in the finals.

Malloy, one of the best distance runners in the state, was able to finish eighth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:06.99.

In the boys’ pole vault finals, Margene was able to finish third as a freshman, while his teammate Underwood was able to finish seventh.

Cady McPhail highlighted the girls with two podium finishes taking second in the 800-meter run and third in the 1,600-meter race. In the 3,200-meter race, Goolsby was able to finish in 10th for the Lions.

Musachia added another top-five finish in the high jump by finishing fifth, while Keller added the final top-five finish in the pole vault finals.

The Shelby County Wildcats also had an athlete worth mentioning as David Vick was able to finish ninth in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet 4 inches.

The Wildcats were also represented by Logan Toth, Emilie Chapple and Jorja Nassirian at the state meet.
