PELHAM – Coming to South City Theatre, just in time for Valentine’s Day, is “Almost, Maine,” a series of loosely connected tales about love, each with a compelling couple at its center, each with its own touch of sorcery.

A woman carries her heart, broken into 19 pieces, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond.

These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s “Almost, Maine,” where on one deeply cold and magical midwinter night, the citizens of Almost – not organized enough for a town, too populated for a wilderness – experience the life-altering power of the human heart.

Relationships end, begin or change beyond recognition, as strangers become friends, friends become lovers and lovers turn into strangers.

The story is propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and sincere.

The cast includes Sara Curren, Justin McGuire, Ashley Richardson, Steven Sullivan, Michael Wilbanks, Gina Vitolo-Stevens, Leslie Price, Jana Hoffman, Marlene Wallace, Tony McGuire, Steven Ross, Jason Cox, Katy Walker, Sara Coffee, Madelyn Walters Harbison, Tara Bennett, Gabrielle Metz, and special appearances by Mike and Sue Ellen Gerrells. The production is directed by Donna Stinson Williamson.

Performances are scheduled for Feb. 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 3 and Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.

South City Theatre is located at 2969 Pelham Parkway, Suites J-K. Tickets at $16 for general admission and $13 for seniors over 60 and students under 18. Tickets are available at Southcitytheatre.com/get-tickets/ or call 621-2128 for reservations.
