ALABASTER – The Oak Mountain Eagles got a tough win on the road to get a season sweep of the Thompson Warriors Friday, Jan. 25, to lock up the No. 2 seed in the area tournament.
The Eagles were hot from the perimeter to start the game and staved off runs from the Warriors in the second and third quarters to pull off the road win, 59-49.
“I thought we played well. I thought we played all four quarters and got great contributions from a bunch of the guys,” Oak Mountain head coach Chris Love said. “We haven’t been able put that together yet so that was encouraging, but we’re going to have to play these guys again in the area tournament and it’s going to be tough and hard-nosed.”
The Eagles (17-8, 4-2) came out on fire from long range and took control of the game from the start. Drew Dunn and Zane Nelson hit five consecutive 3-pointers to open the contest as Oak Mountain grabbed a 17-8 lead and led 21-13 to end the first period.
Dunn kept his foot on the gas in the second quarter as well, hitting two more threes to finish the half with 15 points.
At one point, he had half of his team’s points in the game with his team leading 30-22.
“Drew has been great for us all year, one of the hardest workers that we’ve got,” Love said. “He’s constantly working on his game and he’s a product of hard work, which is a great credit to him. It was nice to see him shoot it really well.”
Tre Roberson played big for the Warriors and kept them within reach scoring all nine of Thompson’s second quarter points, including two deep bombs of his own to close the lead to 26-22.
However, from there Oak Mountain scored the final seven points of the quarter to give themselves a 33-22 halftime lead.
Thompson (17-10, 2-4) made another run at the lead with a good start to the third quarter. Roberson continued his remarkable play hitting two more 3-pointers, and when sophomore J.B. Mitchell hit a third, the Warriors found themselves down just 36-31.
Still, the Eagles responded again and closed out the quarter in familiar fashion with 12 of the last 15 points in the period to preserve their lead at 48-34.
Love knows his team will have to continue to improve their game heading into the postseason and addressed that following the win.
“We’ve got to be better at executing offensively, we’re not big so we’ve got to rebound the basketball, that’s probably our Achilles’ heel,” Love said. “We’ve got to limit our opponents to just one shot.”
Thompson fought back in the fourth quarter, but got no closer than 10 thanks again to Dunn who scored the last six points of the game including his seventh 3-pointer of the night.
Dunn finished with a game-high and season-high 24 points.
Roberson had 19 points, his second best performance this season, to lead Thompson.
