The 2018 All-State football team didn’t feature the most players ever featured from the county, but it may have been the most talented from top to bottom that has ever been produced from Shelby County.

A total of 19 players from across the county were named to the 2018 edition of the All-State team with 18 making the first or second team and one making honorable mention. Those 19 players were part of six different teams to be represented including Thompson Briarwood, Montevallo, Pelham, Calera and Coosa Valley.

Below are the athletes that were recognized on this year’s squad with the full list at the bottom of the article.

Thompson

The Thompson Warriors had more first-team players than any other team in Shelby County and tied with Hoover, Hewitt-Trussville and Auburn for the most in the state with three.

Taulia Tagovailoa, Amari Kight and Will Conner all earned a spot on either the first team offense or defense. All three are also headed to play Division I football next year with Tagovailoa and Kight headed to join the University of Alabama and Conner headed to UAB.

Tagovailoa posted 3,684 yards and 35 touchdowns passing during his senior season, while Conner tallied 50 assisted tackles for a total of 135 during his senior season, adding 14 tackles for loss, four sacks and one interception.

Thompson also added four more players on the second team with running back Shadrick Byrd and wide receiver Mike Pettway both earning nods for the second-team offense, while freshman defensive lineman/linebacker Jeremiah Alexander earned a spot on the second-team defense. D.J. Douglas’ spot on the second team came as an athlete alongside three others as one of the best defenders in the state from the linebacker position.

Byrd totaled 1,403 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 215 carries this season. He also posted 484 receiving yards and four additional touchdowns in the receiving game.

Alexander blew up as a freshman with 74 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and six sacks, while Douglas also had 16 tackles for loss with a total of 95 tackles as well as five sacks and four interceptions.

Worth mentioning, Thompson’s Jalen Bustamante was one of the state leaders in interceptions with seven and totaled 85 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks and was nowhere to be found on the list.

Briarwood

In head coach Fred Yancey’s final year, Briarwood was able to account for four different All-State players, including two first-team players.

Kicker Noah Nall, a junior, was the first to be named to list as the first-team kicker, while linebacker Mark Hand earned a spot on the first-team defense.

Nall went 35-of-

38 on extra point attempts and made five of his seven field goals with a long of 45 yards. He also averaged 35.5 yards per punt. Hand totaled 92 unassisted and 95 assisted tackles for a total of 187 tackles, while also posting 6.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and three interceptions with three defensive touchdowns.

On the offensive line, Trent Howard, also a junior, was named as a member of the second team, while J.R. Tran-Reno earned a nod as a second-team athlete in his final season with the Lions. Tran-Reno totaled 1,045 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns.

Montevallo

The Montevallo Bulldogs also had two unbelievable athletes named to the first team this year in quarterback Malik Inabinette, who was named as the 4A classification’s best overall quarterback, and receiver JJ Evans

Inabinette threw for 3,376 yards and 38 touchdowns this season, while rushing for an additional 201 yards and five touchdowns. Evans was on the receiving end of 1,706 of those yards while posting 18 touchdowns.

Pelham 

The only player named to the All-State teamf rom Pelham was Edward Gipson, an athlete with a ton of potential moving forward to the college level. Gipson totaled 567 receiving yards and six touchdowns on just 33 receptions, which was good enough for 17.2 yards per catch.

Calera

Calera’s Tyler Olds was named as a member of the second-team defense in the 6A classification after putting together a solid season with the Eagles. He totaled 96 tackles this season.

Kicker Zach Ford was named as an honorable mention player at the kicker position after making 4-of-6 field goals this year and 16-of-18 PATs. He also averaged 36 yards per punt and posted 11 touchbacks.

Coosa Valley

The Coosa Valley Rebels were another team with multiple first-team honorees with three total being named to the AISA.

Wide receiver Cody Eades made the first-team offense, while defensive back Reid Maddox made the first-team defense.

Eades totaled 564 rushing yards and 692 receiving yards offensively, while posting 122 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Maddox ended up making the team thanks in large part to being one of the state leaders in interceptions.

Kaleb Allen was also named as a member of the second team as an Athlete thanks to 1,089 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns offensively and 62 tackles defensively.
