ALABASTER – Several teachers at multiple schools in Alabaster were honored by the city’s Board of Education recently for earning one of the highest certifications available to teachers.
Four Creek View Elementary School teachers, one Thompson Intermediate School teacher and one Thompson Middle School teacher earned their National Board certifications, which is the result of multiple years of work, and earned time in the spotlight during a Dec. 10 School Board meeting.
The following ACS teachers recently earned their National Board certification:
CVES:
Terri Barton
Amanda Burks
Kelly Stanton
Abbey Tipton
TIS:
Laura Reina
TMS:
Katharine “Kate” Button
In order to be eligible for National Board Certification, teachers must have a teaching degree, a valid state teaching license and at least three years of teaching experience.
National Board Certification program focuses on five “Core propositions:”
-Teachers are committed to students and to their learning.
-Teachers know the subjects they teach and HOW to teach those subjects to students.
-Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
-Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
-Teachers are members of learning communities.
During their path to obtain National Board Certification, candidates complete four components: A standardized test, focusing on a small number of students to differentiate instruction, videoing and reflecting on classroom instructional time and moving students forward as one instructional unit.
