HELENA – Following the resignation of former Helena City Council President Mike Jones on Nov. 25, the Helena City Council will now move forward with finding a replacement for the vacant place two position.

By law, the council will need to appoint a replacement member within 90 days. Interested applicants must be over 18 years of age and must be a resident of Helena for the last 90 days.

At the Monday, Nov. 26, Helena City Council meeting the Council approved Hal Woodman as the new council president and Laura Joseph as the council president pro tempore.

In regards to Woodman’s election as council president, he said he is humbled to serve in the role.

“I am humbled to have been selected to serve in this leadership role,” Woodman said. “I would like us to have a responsive and transparent government in which residents feel as partners in the community. Helena has been blessed with a volunteerism spirit where residents co-create the small-town experience that ranges from unique city events to small neighborhood festivals.”

The plan for the Helena City Council is to review all new applications at the Dec. 10 council meeting. If no decision is made, it will be pushed to the next council meeting. The decision will require approval of at least three of the four remaining members.

If the Council is unable to appoint a new member after 60 days the decision moves to Gov. Kay Ivey.

Interested applicants should email qualifications with a letter of intent and resume to Helena City Clerk Amanda Traywick at Amanda@cityofhelena.org before 5 p.m. on Dec. 10.

The chosen applicant will only serve the remainder of the current term.
