HARPERSVILLE – The fifth annual Harpersville Day event will be a tribute to veterans, music legends and Alabama’s Bicentennial.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, in the area surrounding Town Hall and the Harpersville Police Department of 83 Town Hall Lane.

Festivities begin with local talent Chad Baker Band performing at 8 a.m., followed by a parade at 10 a.m. and salute to veterans at 11 a.m.

Live music will resume at noon with Tribute to Aretha Franklin and then 2Blu and the Lucky Stiffs.

Ongoing attractions during Harpersville Day will include arts and crafts vendors, informational booths, food vendors, children’s activities, a sneak peek of the new Harpersville Community Center and an antique, cruise-in style car show presented by Street Scene Automotive.

“We have a complete kids zone with face painting and horse rides and more,” said Harpersville Water Clerk Virtie Bell, one of the event’s organizers, and added that an appearance by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office helicopter is expected again.

The parade will begin in the Farmingdale subdivision, proceed down Wheat Street and end at Russell Building Supply.

Harpersville Town Councilman William Knox Rayfield and his wife will serve as grand marshal for the parade in recognition of their legacy of service to the town.

The patriotic program at noon will be led by Col. Randall Zeegers, and Mayor Don Greene will welcome and recognize local military members and veterans, who will receive a gift from the town.

Any veterans interested in attending are encouraged to contact organizers so that they can plan for the number of gifts to have available. Bell and Walkup can be reached by calling Town Hall at 672-9961.

Bell and Walkup are also the contacts for anyone interested in participating in the parade or setting up a vendor booth (spaces are still available).

The winners of a hay bale contest will be announced. Participants include local schools, churches, Scouts and fire and police departments.

“They have come up with some artistic designs,” said Town Clerk Stacy Walkup, also an event organizer.

Chairs will be provided for attendees to enjoy live music throughout the day.

Harpersville is one of Shelby County’s oldest communities and was founded before the county and state of Alabama.

Big Springs, as it was originally called, was settled around 1815 by the Harper and Kidd families.

The 2018 Harpersville Day is part of the Alabama Bicentennial effort.
