VINCENT – The Vincent Yellow Jackets’ volleyball team closed out their 2018 regular-season with a victory to gain momentum heading into the postseason, as they look to put together a deep run.
Vincent was able to pick up the victory by a final score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20) on Thursday, Oct. 18, in a road matchup against the Alabama School for the Deaf.
The Yellow Jackets started out a little slow and found themselves behind the eight ball when the Silent Warriors came out and took a closely contested first set.
Vincent was close to pulling off a victory to start out the match trailing 24-23 late, but instead the Warriors were able to close out set point to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.
It didn’t take long, however, for the Yellow Jackets to flip a switch in the second set.
After the slow start, Vincent came back a set later and, while battling in a close set, was able to eventually pull away late for a six-point 25-19 victory to even the match up 1-1.
That was a crucial win, as a 2-0 deficit would have been a tough hole to climb out of.
Now evened up, the Yellow Jackets gained some momentum and used it to their advantage in the third set, going on to win by the widest margin of any of the four sets by either team in the match, taking the set 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead overall.
The Warriors came out in the fourth set, knowing they needed to pick up a win to force a fifth-and-final set to determine the winner, which led to a thrilling set for a while.
Aside from the first set, it was the closest of the match, but in the end, the Yellow Jackets had just a little more energy and went on to close the set out with a 25-20 victory to take home a 3-1 win to close out the regular season.
