Man, 67, charged with sexually abusing mentally disabled victim

COLUMBIANA – A 67-year-old Montevallo man is being held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $20,000 after he was arrested by the Alabaster Police Department and charged with sex crimes involving a mentally disabled victim.
Alabaster police arrested Gregory Cox Jr., who lists an address on Selma Road in Montevallo, and charged him with felony counts of second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy.
Both charges are Class B felonies, and could carry up to 20 years in prison upon conviction.
According to his arrest warrants, Cox allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse and deviate sexual intercourse with “a member of the opposite sex who was incapable of consent by reason of being mentally defective” between July 1 and July 31 of this year.
As of Oct. 1, Cox did not yet have a hearing date set in Shelby County District Court.
