John Allen Hines, Jr., (affectionately known as ‘Buddy’ and ‘JJ’) of Alabaster passed away Thursday, Aug. 23, age 90.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John Allen Hines, Sr. and Jesse Irwin Pratt Hines; step-mother, Myra Dubose Hines; sisters, Elizabeth Hines Vandiver Bouchillon and Shearer Hines Anderson; and step-daughter, Dana Mann.

Survivors include his wife, Linda R Hines; and JJ’s four children, Merida Hines Tyler, Camille Brown (Pete), Ashley Mohrman (Morgan), and Allen C Hines; six grandchildren, Drew Tyler, Clay and Chase Mohrman, Christian, Emery and Clarke Hines; two great-grandchildren, Cole and Addison Tyler.

JJ attended Gulf Coast Military Academy and The University of Alabama graduating in 1949, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Following graduation, he served in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Germany and discharged as a First Lieutenant. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. JJ owned Hines Real Estate in Alabaster and served as President of the First Savings and Loan of Shelby County in Columbiana for 13 years.

His hobbies included Alabama football, golf, reading, fishing on Lake Mitchell, summers in Maine and Newfoundland, and snow skiing. JJ lived a full life and never met a stranger. His last years were spent at Columbiana Health and Rehab and we thank them for their caring and kind support.

He will be missed by his family and friends, as well as his constant canine companion, Buster.

A celebration of life will be held at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo) on Friday, Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. A committal service will follow at the Alabama National Cemetery at 2:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
