CHELSEA – A fire on the morning of Sept. 15 heavily damaged the concession stand at Chelsea Middle School and damaged equipment in the school’s locker room, according to information released by the city.
Chelsea Fire and Rescue responded to the school at 10:27 a.m. after receiving a call of a fire at the school.
When firefighters from Stations 31 and 32 arrived, they discovered the concession stand was on fire and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.
“I am happy to report that the fire is out and there were no injuries,” read a post on the city of Chelsea’s Facebook page. “The building is a total loss. Early indications are than an unattended deep fryer is the cause of the fire.
“There will be an assessment made of the damage and to the loss of equipment in the locker room that is destroyed,” the post read. “After the SCBOE completes its assessment of damage and completes its investigation, we stand ready to help in any way we can in the rebuild or replacement of the facility. Huge thanks to our first responders for their quick response and work.”
The city is planning to immediately replace any damaged athletic equipment needed in the school’s upcoming games, according to the city.
