ALABASTER – A pair of local nonprofit organizations will be looking to give local residents a taste of the best chili around in late October, and strategically planned the event on a weekend both the Auburn and Alabama football teams are off.

The Elaine Roberts Foundation is teaming up with the Angel Warriors Foundation to host the “It’s for the kids” chili cookoff on Oct. 27 in the parking lot of Westwood Baptist Church at 1155 Alabaster Boulevard.

The competition will feature two divisions: One for kids 17 and younger and another for adults 18 and older, and entrants can prepare any chili they like as long as it is cooked on-site the day of the event.

Cost to enter the contest is $50 per entrant, which will benefit the pair of organizations, and judges will choose the winner and runner-up in each division.

Gates will open to the public at 10:30 a.m. to taste the entrants’ recipes, and entry will be $10 in advance or $15 at the gate. Kids 10 and under are admitted free, and patrons will be able to vote on a People’s Choice Award to be given out along with the judges’ awards.

In addition to the chili cookoff, the event will feature live music from “The Daze” and games and inflatables for the kids.

The Elaine Roberts Foundation was founded in memory of 16-year-old Roberts, who died in February 2016 after a battle with childhood cancer, and works to raise money to support research into a cure for childhood cancer. The Angel Warriors Foundation provides resources and special events for local individuals with special needs and their families.
