After a troubling 3-11 record for teams across the county, and some difficult play from teams across the state, there was a good bit of shake up in the most recent ASWA high school football rankings when they were released on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

A week ago, the storyline was the Thompson Warriors overtaking Hoover for the No. 1 spot in the Class 7A standings for the first time in school history, but one week later, the Warriors are two spots lower at No. 3 after a 45-26 loss to Hoover in a game that was closer than the final score represented.

With the win, Hoover jumped back up to No. 1, while 3-0 Central-Phenix City moved one spot ahead of the Warriors to No. 2 in the standings.

It’s just one region game as Thompson still has seven games remaining in the regular season, including six region matchups to determine its playoff fate.

While the Warriors fell from the No. 1 spot, Briarwood remained there.

The Lions, who have been at the top of the 5A standings since the preseason, were tested against Pleasant Grove and still have difficult matchups Ramsay and Wenonah remaining, but currently sit at 2-0 overall and 1-0 in region play with 21 wins in a row in the regular season.

With a defense giving up just six points per game right now, it’s going to take a special offensive team to take Briarwood down this year.

Those were the only two top-10 teams in this week’s standings, but there were several others teams scattered throughout that received votes and were listed as well.

The highest of those teams were both Montevallo and Kingwood.

Both teams found the No. 12 spot in the standings thanks to strong starts this season.

The Bulldogs remain undefeated this year, while Kingwood is coming off its only loss of the year to No. 1 Tuscaloosa Academy.

The other two teams to receive votes were both in the 7A classification as the Oak Mountain Eagles and Spain Park Jaguars both received two points and came in at tie for 15th along with James Clemens.

Both teams are looking to get back on track after tough stretches, specifically Spain Park, but are plenty capable of being a top-10 team at the end of this year.

With region play just getting under way, it will be interesting to see how the 2018 football season unfolds moving forward.
