Last week’s record: 3-2
Overall record: 3-2
Week one of AISA and ACSC action is now in the books with some major storylines after Kingwood started the season with a dominant victory against Pickens Academy, while both Cornerstone and Evangel followed suit.
While Coosa Valley didn’t get off to the start it wanted to against Hooper Academy in game one, they also got some valuable experience moving forward, while the Hope Christian Eagles now have two games under their belts.
Below, we breakdown Week 2 action for all five of those teams, including a big in-county matchup between the Evangel Lightning and Kingwood Lions.
Coosa Valley vs. Pickens Academy
Coosa Valley struggled in its opener against Hooper Academy falling 28-8, but Hooper is a solid team with a bright season ahead, and Coosa is a young squad that got better as the game went along.
Pickens Academy beat the Rebels 42-6 last year, but they also beat Kingwood 60-0. This year seems to be a different story, however, as the Lions just shut Pickens down with a 34-0 victory. Pickens is down this year, which gives the Rebels an advantage, especially with tape and game experience to make adjustments into Week 2. As long as the offense can get some early momentum in this one, the Rebels will roll. Coosa Valley 28, Pickens Academy 12.
Cornerstone @ Springwood
Cornerstone’s passing game needs some work, but the run game and defense was dominant to start the season in their 41-14 win against Sparta Academy. Springwood is coming off a 23-12 win against Success Unlimited to start the season, but it’s hard to tell if that means much this early in the season.
It could be a close game for a while, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Springwood snuck this one out at home, but if Cornerstone’s defense is as energized this week as they were last week, they’ll be 2-0 at the end of Friday night. Cornerstone 27, Springwood 15
Kingwood vs. Evangel Alabaster
This game all of a sudden has a lot of intrigue between the two county rivals as Kingwood started the season with a statement 34-0 shutout of Pickens Academy, while Evangel also got off to a strong start with a 48-0 shutout of Evangel Christian from Montgomery.
Both teams showed a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, especially the defensive side of the ball, which propelled each offense forward. It will be interesting to see who will have the upper hand in this game Friday night, but it’s going to be a tight contest between the two Alabaster schools. Evangel 28, Kingwood 20
Hope @ Tabernacle
Hope is now 1-1 on the season after a 64-48 loss to East Memorial in an 8-man game this past Friday, but should have the chance to bounce back against Tabernacle this Friday, a team they beat 88-72 last season. It could be another high-scoring affair, but I think the Eagles will come out on top as long as they are healthy and the offense continues putting up points. Hope 49, Tabernacle 42
