According to the 2011 U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, 1 in 3 volunteers are at least 55 years old. During that year, volunteering by seniors hit a 10-year high. Growing older for Pearline Mae Cardwell has been an empowering and fulfilling experience.

She uses the knowledge and experience from her past 90 years to make a difference in the lives those around her.

Born on a farm in Wilcox County, Alabama, “Pearlie Mae,” as she is known throughout her community, looks forward to each new day.

“I am so blessed,” she said. “I love to help other people in any way that I can.”

During her 42-year tenure at Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Cardwell served as the president of the Missionary Society, secretary for Shelby Spring District Association’s Women’s Department, fundraising advisor, choir member, usher and janitor.

Winning second place, she was awarded a trophy for her tireless dedication and ongoing contribution over the years.

Last year, Pearlie Mae worked the Thanksgiving Holiday Meal Project.

“My Team provided the food items for a complete holiday meal for eight families in the Montevallo community. The meal included sweet potatoes, cake mix and rolls,” she said.

When she is not volunteering in the numerous capacities which she serves through her church, Pearlie Mae can be found at the local Senior Center where she has attended for over 15 years. She enjoys sewing and participates in the activities the center provides and any project that she can help out with.

Cardwell is a member of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. She has been a member since 2009. She was awarded the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2017.

“I’m just wild about RSVP,” she said.
