HOOVER – One person was killed and two others injured when a train apparently struck a vehicle at a crossing on Elvira Road on Saturday, Aug. 18.

Alex Lyndsey Newman, 35, of West Blocton was identified by the Shelby County Coroner’s Office as the person killed in the incident, according to a release from the Hoover Police Department.

Hoover police and fire personnel responded to the scene, which is near the Lake Wilborn development, at 3:44 p.m. on Aug. 18, according to the release.

“Officers arrived to find a red, 2012 Kia Sportage overturned and three patients outside of the vehicle,” the release stated. “All three crash victims were transported to UAB Hospital by Hoover Fire and Rescue.

“One of the victims, determined to be a passenger in the vehicle, died in surgery. The other two victims are still in the hospital but are expected to survive.”

The preliminary investigation determined the vehicle was traveling north on Elvira Road when it was struck on the passenger side by a CSX train headed west, according to police.

The HPD Traffic Unit is investigating what factors contributed to the crash.
