ALABASTER – An abandoned home off Kent Dairy Road in Alabaster soon will come down after the City Council agreed to fund the demolition during a recent meeting.

Council members voted unanimously during their Aug. 13 meeting to award a $4,000 bid to Cornerstone Tree Service to demolish a structure at 2030 Kent Dairy Road.

The vote came a little more than a month after council members voted to approve tearing down abandoned homes at the Kent Dairy Road address and at 37 10^th Ave. S.E. The Kent Dairy Road property is directly behind the Walgreens store off Alabama 119, and the 10^th Avenue Southeast property is off Old U.S. 31.

City Council members voted to approve the demolitions following public hearings on both matters, during which nobody spoke for or against.

The city’s Housing Abatement Board voted previously to recommend the vacant structures be torn down, and passed the matter on to the City Council for final consideration.

Since council members agreed to demolish the structures, the city will cover the cost of the demolition and attach the cost as a lien against the property, which will have to be repaid before the property could be sold in the future.
