CALERA – In an effort to help the homeless in Shelby County, Gerome Singleterry recently started a project called Pray for the Homeless.
“This is something that God has put on my heart,” Singleterry said. “I feel like the homeless are being neglected in America and God wanted me to start doing something to help the homeless. The average American sees a homeless person and thinks that person is a bum looking for a handout, but not all of these people are like that.”
In fact, Singleterry said a lot of homeless people are military veterans and well educated people who experience some sort of trauma in their lives and have a difficult time recovering or getting back to reality.
Singleterry is selling Pray for the Homeless T-shirts and 10 percent of the proceeds from sales will be donated to organizations that off help and support for homeless people.
“I already have an agreement in place to work with Three Hots and a Cot,” he said. “I’m starting out with one organization and depending on how this goes, I will reach out to more organizations.”
Three Hots and a Cot is a nonprofit organization formed by veterans to help veterans. The group’s primary mission is to assist homeless military veterans transition from life on the streets into a self-sustained lifestyle.
Singleterry said he is only selling T-shirts right now, but he plans to expand the project to include hats, cups, coffee mugs and other every-day items.
The shirts cost $14.95 and come in sizes small through 3X. Singleterry said he hopes to get area churches involved to help with selling the shirts.
“It’s not about the money for me,” he said. “I’m a designer, an inventor and God blessed me with creativity, and this is where my heart is at.”
The shirts are available for purchase by contacting Singleterry at Singleterrygerome62@gmail.com.
