ALABASTER – The Angel Warriors Foundation is giving members of the special needs community an opportunity to take part in an important Easter tradition during its second annual Special Needs EGGstravaganza from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, at the Thompson Warriors football field.

According to AWF President Jamia Alexander-Williams, eggs will be hidden throughout the field for visitors to find. Each plastic egg will have a prize hidden within, and can be submitted at the end of the event for even more prizes.

“We’re going to have a whole field full of eggs,” Williams said.

Additionally, Williams said the Special Needs EGGstravaganza will offer a variety of treats and activities, including shaved ice, cotton candy, a bouncy house and a bubble machine.

Williams said the event began in 2016 after AWF recognized a need in the community. According to a parent who reached out to Williams, her autistic son was almost trampled when she took him to a typical Easter Egg hunt. In order to accommodate everyone, Williams said extra safety precautions will be taken and sensory-friendly spaces will be available.

The Special Needs EGGstravaganza is open to people of all abilities, and Williams encouraged everyone to join in.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re mobile or not,” Williams said. “It’s so important for them to get to enjoy what we enjoy.”

Williams said last year’s event made a positive impact on the community, and she’s excited to see familiar faces and new visitors among this year’s crowd.

“It will be bigger than it was last year, and the turnout was huge then,” Williams said.
