CHELSEA – The city of Chelsea resolved to enter into contracts with several local businesses and organizations, as well as make several purchases for the city, during a regularly scheduled council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

During the meeting, the council unanimously voted in favor of authorizing Mayor Tony Picklesimer to sign contracts with the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham and BellSouth Telecommunications, LLC.

According to Picklesimer, the contract with the Greater Shelby Chamber will cost the city $5,000 and enable it to be a part of the Chamber’s countywide, five-year development plan known as Shelby One-Next Level Up.

“One of the biggest things for us is workforce development. Another is to create jobs in our city,” Picklesimer said. “This is to market our cities and our county.”

Picklesimer will also sign a contract with the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham for two separate projects, an updated comprehensive plan for the city and a drawn-up overlay of U.S. 280. He said the projects will cost the city’s 20 percent match a total of $35,000.

Through the franchise agreement with BellSouth Telecommunications, Picklesimer said the city will receive a percent of the revenues.

The city also resolved to purchase two playsets for the playground at City Hall and the sports complex on Shelby County 47. The sum of both playsets will cost the city $72,000.

While renovations are underway for the new Chelsea Public Library location, the city resolved to pay $34,700 for the installation of a fire hydrant on the property.

Before the meeting concluded, the council resolved to pay the city’s bills and noted higher-than-usual use of utilities from municipal facilities because of the recent cold weather.
