Woman accused of exposing unborn child to drugs

COLUMBIANA – A Columbiana woman was recently arrested and charged with chemical endangerment of a child after she allegedly exposed her unborn child to multiple drugs.
Kayla Hester Zimmer, 28, who lists an address at Town Creek Apartments, was taken into custody by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, Jan. 22. According to her arrest warrant, Zimmer allegedly “knowingly, recklessly or intentionally,” brought the unborn child into contact with marijuana and bhenzodiazepines on Jan. 1.
Chemical endangerment of a child is a Class C felony, which can be penalized by up to 10 years in prison upon conviction.
Zimmer’s case was assigned to Shelby County District Court Judge Daniel A. Crowson Jr. After her arrest, Zimmer was held at the Shelby County Jail on a $15,000 bond. date for a preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.
As of Jan. 29, the Shelby County Jail has not released Zimmer’s mugshot.
