Winter weather advisory issued for central Alabama

The Birmingham National Weather Service recently issued a winter weather advisory for central Alabama from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8. Meteorologist Mark Rose said residents of Shelby County can expect about half an inch of snow, which is expected to accumulate on mainly grassy and elevated surfaces.
While many residents are comparing the upcoming weather to the snowstorm that occurred in 2014, Rose said the tomorrow’s weather situation will likely be much tamer.
“It definitely won’t be that, because we’re not expecting temperatures to hit below freezing,” Rose said. “It will probably be nothing like what we experienced in 2014.”
Because temperatures will not reach below freezing until Friday night, Rose said he is unsure of what tomorrow’s travel conditions will be like. He said the best time to travel would likely be early-to-mid afternoon. Ice on the roads is possible on Friday night.
All local public school systems will be closed.
Rose encouraged central Alabama residents to stay alert and regularly check for weather updates. For more information about tomorrow’s weather conditions, visit the Birmingham National Weather Service’s website at weather.gov/bmx or call 664-3010.
