CALERA–On the same day Calera found out it would be moving up to the 6A classification beginning in the 2018 sports season, the Lady Eagles basketball team got a glimpse of the future as they took on Helena in a wild game on Nov. 30.
For now, Calera competes in the 5A classification and Helena competes in 6A, but beginning next season, the two teams will compete in the same region after the AHSAA announced reclassification for the next two sports seasons.
The two teams battled to the very end, but it was the visiting Huskies that pulled out a 48-47 win.
Calera pulled away in the second quarter to take a 28-23 lead at halftime but the difference in the game was the scoring of Helena’s Jordan Jones and the Huskies effectiveness in the fourth quarter.
Jones finished with 27 points to lead all scorers and accounted for more than half of Helena’s scoring offense.
The Huskies outscored Calera 20-9 in the fourth quarter to get the one-point victory.
A.B. Davis led Calera with 19 points, while Sarah Goodwin added 16.
