COLUMBIANA – An Alabaster man is currently behind bars after he was recently arrested and charged with assault in the second degree and resisting arrest.

Michael Craig Brittain, 47, who lists an address on South Forty Road, was arrested by the Alabaster Police Department on Saturday, Nov. 4. According to his arrest warrants, Brittain allegedly physically injured a victim with a “Japanese wooden sword” on the day of his arrest. He also allegedly attempted to prevent an officer from arresting him.

According to a bond recommendation, the victim is a part-time resident at Brittain’s home. The bond recommendation stated that a police interview conducted after Brittain’s arrest raised concerns about mental health, alleging that he provided a detailed description of his plans to murder the victim and the victim’s ex-spouse and dispose of their bodies.

Second degree assault is a class C felony, which can carry a minimum prison sentence of 10 years if a deadly weapon is used, as well as a maximum of $15,000 in fines. Resisting arrest is a class B misdemeanor, which can be punished by up to six months in prison and $3,000 in fines upon conviction.

As of Monday, Nov. 6, Brittain remains in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $50,500. His case has been assigned to Shelby County District Court Judge Daniel A. Crowson and a preliminary hearing date has not been scheduled.
