ALABASTER – Kindergarten students at Meadow View Elementary School spent the day engaging in fun and educational fall-themed activities at the school’s annual Fall Fun Day on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
“They enjoy this day every year,” MVES Principal Rachea Simms said. “It’s always fun.”
According to MVES teacher Kathy Matthews, kindergarteners rotated throughout different stations to develop skills related to science, technology, engineering, art and math while also enjoying autumn or Halloween.
“We don’t dress up for Halloween, so it gives the kids a chance to do something special to celebrate the fall season,” Matthews said.
While no two classes did the exact same thing, Matthews said some of the activities included a “scarecrow” relay race while wearing a straw hat and a flannel shirt, building fences based off of the poem “Five Little Pumpkins,” building towers out of pumpkin-shaped marshmallows and toothpicks and using iPads to make the sheets they colored move around. Students also conducted an experiment where they tested whether pumpkins of various sizes were able to float in water.
Matthews said students were also able to express themselves artistically by using their thumbprints to make pictures of pumpkins and decorating special, fall-themed snacks.
“This gives them something fun to do while bringing fall into the classroom,” Matthews said.
In addition to the emphasis Fall Fun Day placed on STEAM activities, Matthews it also helped students develop social skills and a sense of teamwork.
“With kindergarten, you have to use so many hands-on activities,” Matthews said. “They’re learning about how to collaborate and how to share.”
For physical education, teachers turned the lights off in the gym and had students participate in a variety of stations with light-up equipment.
“I feel like I’m really going to enjoy the stations in the gym with all of the lights inside,” kindergarten student Dawnlin Jeffers said after she finished an earlier activity.
Dawnlin said she was happy to spend the day participating in all of the different activities, and especially enjoyed the fact that she and all of her classmates were able to win prizes after some of the activities.
“I’m doing some really good activities and learning about some stuff,” Danwlin said. “We get to do so many activities. We did a scarecrow race and I got eyeball glasses. Everybody ran so fast, so everybody got a prize.”
