PELHAM – The Pelham Public Library will host its annual book sale Aug. 7-25 with the proceeds going toward the Pelham Library Building Fund.
The book sale will be held in the library’s meeting room. Library Supervisor David Smith said there will be hundreds of books and materials on sale that will range in price from 50 cents to $2. Smith said some of the books are received through donations and others were pulled from the library’s collection.
The book sale will include fiction, nonfiction, children’s and recipe books, audio books, DVDs and more. The book sale will be open during normal library hours, which are Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays.
“This is an annual book sale, but it has taken on more importance this year because it will benefit the building fund,” Smith said. “Our building fund is just past $125,000 and our goal is $300,000, so we’ve got a lot more that we need to raise.”
The city’s new library is under construction and is expected to be completed in March 2018. The building fund will be used to purchase furniture and additional amenities for the facility.
Those who visit the book sale are also invited to stop by the LifeSouth Bloodmobile to give blood on Wednesday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Bloodmobile will sit in the library’s parking lot.
Smith said the library hosts a blood drive at least twice per year. In the U.S. and Canada, 43,000 pints of donated blood are used each day. One pint of blood can save up to three lives.
The book sale isn’t the only fundraiser currently under way for the library’s building fund. The library is now selling red, pink, yellow and blue cardboard hearts that will be on display in the library’s atrium. The fundraiser is ongoing until Valentine’s Day.
The different color hearts each have a different price – red hearts are $1, pink are $2, blue are $5 and yellow are $10.
“When someone buys a heart they can put their name on it or the name of a loved one,” Smith said. “Our goal is to fill up the atrium with hearts.”
The Pelham Library Guild’s engraved brick fundraiser is also in progress. The fundraiser gives residents an opportunity to support the library while also recognizing loved ones or promoting a business. Each engraved brick can have up to three lines and 20 characters. Bricks can be in honor or memory of a loved one, promote a business or celebrate the birth of a child.
The engraved brick fundraiser will continue through Sept. 1. Each engraved brick costs $200. The bricks will be placed in the covered entryway of the library.
In addition to the engraved bricks, naming rights are still available for about 25 spaces inside of the library.
