PELHAM – On Aug. 9, Pelham Police Department Chief Larry Palmer will be thrown into a police car and taken to the slammer in an effort to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Palmer has volunteered to go behind bars to help raise money during the MDA’s annual Lock-Up fundraiser. To earn his freedom, Palmer must raise money for his bail.

The event will take place at Heart of Dixie Harley Davidson, 333 Cahaba Valley Parkway N., from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9.

The event raises money for children and adults diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that take away basic functions such as the ability to walk, talk, hug and even breathe.

“I consider it an honor to be locked-up if it means helping to provide freedom to those who endure the pain of these diseases day in and day out,” Palmer stated in a news release.

Palmer has set a fundraising goal of $2,000, but he hopes to exceed that.

“Even though my bail is only $2,000, I hope the community rallies behind me, so that I can turn over an even larger check to Alabama MDA upon my release from jail,” Palmer stated.

MDA provided care and support to more than 100,000 individuals in 2016. More than 3,800 children received their “best week of the year” at MDA Summer Camp last year. The camp is free of charge for families.

“I’m hoping to walk in the door with my bail money set,” Palmer said. “MDA is a great organization. What really caught my eye about this fundraiser is that they use part of the money raised to send kids to summer camp.”

MDA is also supporting 150 research projects worldwide and awarded nearly 70 MDA research grants in 2016 with a total funding commitment of more than $16 million.
