ALABASTER -Kingwood Christian School seniors celebrated the school’s annual Awards Day and participated in the first KCS Graduate Walk on Wednesday, May 17.
“This is an additional opportunity that we have to recognize all of their hard work,” KCS Principal Ruth Gray said.
Before the awards ceremony began, Gray said the first Graduate Walk was introduced to KCS. During Graduate Walk, seniors paired up with “graduating” kindergarten students and paraded through the halls. Gray said Graduate Walk went well, and the school plans to make it an annual event.
“So many of the different schools are doing it. It was so neat to witness, so we wanted to do it for our seniors,” Gray said. “We’re fortunate enough to have our kindergarteners and seniors in the same building. Some of our seniors even started with us. This was a special thing from beginning to end.”
Gray said KCS annually hosts an awards day for seniors to ensure that all seniors who have received scholarships and awards are recognized.
“This has been a tradition for years. A lot of times, only the athletes are recognized, and we want to make sure that those with academic scholarships are honored as well,” Gray said.
Representatives from the following colleges, businesses and organizations presented scholarships to students: Maids Cleaning Service, Vulcan Steel, Psi Xi Omega, Jacksonville State University, Huntingdon College, Birmingham-Southern College, Mississippi State, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University.
During Awards Day, teachers recognized students who held the highest GPA and improved the most in their classes. Students received honor cords and seniors Garret Landry and Kathryn Boyd were named as Mr. and Ms. KCS.
