COLUMBIANA–Kevin Morris has resigned from Shelby County Board of Education effective Feb. 13.  Morris, who served for two years as a school board member, submitted his letter to Board President Aubrey Miller at the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, Feb. 16. Morris resigned after being sworn on Monday week to fill the open seat of District One for Shelby County Commission.

Morris was appointed by Gov. Robert Bentley to fill the vacant seat of Corley Ellis, who recently accepted an appointment to the Alabama House of Representatives District 41.

Morris wrote his letter of resignation and stated publicly at the board meeting that he has always been proud to represent the Shelby County School District at both state and national functions. He credited Superintendent Randy Fuller’s leadership in continuing to raise the bar on excellence.

“Shelby County Schools is a leader in innovation and educational initiatives. We have a first-rate administration and I am thankful to call many of them friends,” Morris wrote. “We serve so much diversity in our county, but do it in one accord, with one goal in mind: Every child a graduate. Every graduate prepared.”

With three children in school, Morris said he has a passion and a vested interest in the Shelby County School District.

“I have three children that attend our system and want to make sure that they, along with children in our county, have the best educational foundation available. You will continue to have my support,” Morris wrote.

“Serving the citizens of Shelby County in this capacity has been an honor. While I am sad to turn the page, I look forward to my continued servant hood in this next endeavor.” Morris concluded.

According to state law, the Shelby County Board of Education members must appoint a new board member within the next 30 days to fill the remaining year and a half of Morris’s term.

The board will immediately begin accepting applications to fill the position. Interested candidates should send a letter of interest and resume to Betty Jo Phillips, Shelby County Board of Education, P.O. Box 1910, Columbiana, AL  35051.
