Charity organization State of Love visited residents at Chelsea’s Hidden Acres at 9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19.

“We went to a nursing home. We gave out cards and read books and sang Christmas carols to them,” said State of Love founder and Oak Mountain Elementary School student Grier Feldman. “They really loved it, and they were happy. They asked if we could come back sometime.”

State of Love returned to Chelsea’s Hidden Acres on Thursday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m.

“They had such a good time that they’re going back,” said her mother, Bragan Feldman. “They’re painting canvases to take down to the residents. They’re going to play Christmas carols, sing songs to them and give them presents.”

Grier and her friends, Aubrey Goodwin and Natalie Harrington, also played the piano, guitar and violin for residents.

According to Feldman, Grier was originally inspired to start State of Love after seeing the work of the Children’s Miracle Network.

“She’s always been very empathetic. She has very long hair, and she asked if she could cut her hair off and give it to them. I told her ‘why don’t we see if there’s something else we could do?’” Feldman said.

Feldman said State of Love previously reached out to J&M Bookstore in Auburn where they bought collegiate hats and donated them to patients at the Pediatric Cancer Center at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham.

“We don’t just give hats to people. We try to make a smile on everyone’s face who really needs it,” Grier said.

Grier said giving back to the community is something she enjoys doing.

“I feel really great when I get to make a smile on anybody’s face who needs to be happy,” Grier said.

Feldman said it is unusual for an elementary school student to start her own charity, and she is incredibly proud of the work her daughter has done.

“I try and keep my kids humble, but when I take a step back, she is really special. She also twirls, and she’s able to do that and have such a giving heart. It wasn’t my doing, but it makes me proud to be her mom,” Feldman said.
