HOW IT HAPPENED
Montevallo overcame a slow start in the opening half as the Falcons defeated Auburn-Montgomery 67-52 in the first meeting between the future Gulf South Conference rivals in 20 years.
The first half was a defensive struggle between the Warhawks and the Falcons, who finished 0-for-5 from beyond the arc and trailed 25-22 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was a complete turnaround for Danny Young’s team as the Falcons outscored the Warhawks 45-27 in the final 20 minutes. Senior Javonte Douglas scored a game-high 26 points, with 17 points coming in the second half.
Montevallo shot 43 percent compared to just 29 percent for Auburn-Montgomery in the victory.
Senior Talan Whitaker also had a big night on the glass as he finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
STAT OF THE GAME
Junior Tighe Oberg finished with a game-high 10 rebounds in his best game of the season. The junior from Islip, New York also chipped in with four points and kept the Warhawks’ Jarrett Croff quiet all night as he limited the 6-foot-10 center to seven points.
