 FAIRFIELD – The Shelby County Wildcats traveled to Fairfield on Friday night, Sept. 30, to take on the Tigers in a Class 5A Region 5 matchup.

After a big come from behind win against Springville in an out of area game for homecoming on Sept. 23, the Wildcats had gotten back on the winning track and desperately needed a big area win against Fairfield.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats they would fall behind the eight ball early for the fourth consecutive week and just couldn’t catch back up as they would fall by a final score of 44-14.

Fairfield would come out firing on all cylinders and score 18 unanswered points in the first quarter and then another 20 unanswered in the second quarter to take a 38-0.

They would tack on 6 unanswered in the third to score 44 straight unanswered points through three quarters.

Shelby County would finally put some points on the board in the fourth quarter scoring 14 to make the final look a little less harsh.

The consensus was that this was the year Shelby County head coach Heath Childers would take the Wildcats to the playoffs and if that is still the hope, they may have to win out the rest of the season as they have now fallen to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in area play.

This puts Shelby County in the bottom half of the division with three area games left to play.

Lamont Bush carried the ball 12 times for 88 yards and a touchdown, while Keyvonte Mayfield tallied 68 yards on 25 carries and Chadwyn Russ added a rushing touchdown.

The Wildcats hit the road for the second consecutive week on Friday, Oct. 4, to take on Pleasant Grove in a must win game. The Spartans lost to Wenonah in their last game and boast a 2-4 overall record and are 2-2 in area play meaning the Wildcats could pass them with a win on Friday night.
