HOOVER – The Greystone Ladies Club installed new executive board members and officers for the 2016-2017 year before hearing a presentation on honeybees at a May 11 luncheon.

Outgoing GLC President Tina Douglass passed the gavel to incoming President Ranea Breen, who asked every club member present to place a flower in a vase to represent individual members coming together to form a unified group.

Other incoming board members and officers include: Michelle Matlock, Kathy Frey, Myrtis Horton, Denise Tassone, Barbara Brickner, Katila Farley and Jenice Prather-Kinsey.

The club learned about honeybees from Cahaba Valley Honey beekeepers Neal and Doris Snider, who have been beekeepers since 2000.

“We delight in sharing the knowledge of our bees with everyone,” Doris Snider said.

The couple manages about 60 beehives.

She read the book “Busy buzzy bee” aloud.

“If we were to lose all honeybees, we would lose a third of our food,” Doris said. “They are very important to mankind.”

Neal went through facts about honeybees, which come from U.S. and Europe.

The three kinds of bees in a hive are the worker, queen and drone.

In club announcements, the GLC raised $227.50 at its Painting with a Twist event for the Shelby Humane Society on May 3.
